Law Enforcement: "To Protect and to Serve" PDF Print E-mail
Sadly, Ohio is fifth in the nation for number of officers lost in the line of duty and the names of over 670 police officers are listed on the memorial wall located at the Ohio Peace Officer’s training academy in London, Ohio. Families of police officers begin every single day with the knowledge that those they love may be injured, or be killed in the line of duty. Police officers start their day with the knowledge that because they have chosen to serve their communities, their own families may one day be left to manage on their own. The selfless service and sacrifice of these brave men and women and their families is an incredible gift to all of us and although we will never be able to say thank you enough, should the opportunity arise, we should do so. So thank you, each one of you, for all that you do to keep our communities safe, and for all. To learn about one very special member of Ohio's law enforcement team...

Sheriff Neil F. Hassinger-Serving The People...

“Loved” seems a unusual word to apply to a police chief, but there can be no doubt that Sheriff Hassinger is loved by the community that he serves. When Sheriff Hassinger became Medina County’s sheriff, he brought with him years of experience in a wide variety of areas of law enforcement and had a proven track record of service to the communities in which he served. In 2004, he received the Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton Award. Besides working to ensure that Medina County remained one of the safest communities in our region, Sheriff Hassinger also created and implemented a number of programs to reach out to the families that he serves and ensure that they would know as much as possible about how to keep their families safe.
One very special program that is offered in Medina County is the Deputy Care program. The Deputy Care Program is based on the concept that there are many senior citizens in Medina County who are “lonely, handicapped, unable to get out of their homes or to go to the store for groceries, or are just having a hard time managing being one their own. The program encourages Sheriff’s Deputies on patrol to seek out seniors in their jurisdiction who can use a friend and then establish and maintain a relationship on a fairly regular basis. Should the Deputy see that the person is in need of some assistance, they contact the Medina County Office for Older Adults so they can give the family a hand. There are many seniors who struggle to meet the challenges of aging and the Deputy Care Program makes their days just a little bit easier. Under his leadership, the Medina County Sheriff’s Office has received both statewide and national recognition for the work that they do and Medina County deeply appreciates their efforts.

All of these things have made Sheriff Hassinger an incredible asset to the community in which he serves and a Sheriff of which we can all be proud, not to mention an outstanding role model for our young people. But what makes Sheriff Hassinger truly special is that first and foremost, he is a man of deep faith, and a man who truly cares about each and every one of the people that he serves. Being a member of law enforcement is a pretty tough job, and unfortunately, it’s often a thankless one. After all, who ever thanks a police officer for giving them a ticket? But without traffic officers, how many more tragic accidents might occur each year? And it’s doubtful that anyone thanks a police officer for arresting them, but how many more murders, robberies and other violent crimes might occur if we didn’t have so many dedicated police officers. People from all over the world travel to the United States each year and apply to become citizens because they want to live in a free country. But what kind of freedom would that be, if we had no one to enforce our laws and keep our communities safe? As moms we are very grateful to Sheriff Hassinger for his service, and for the service of all those who work to keep Ohio's families safe.
