Update on the Moms for Ohio Pledge of Allegiance Project |
|
|
|
The license plate, which says "One Nation Under God" and has the American Flag on it is a specialty plate and simply provides for families who would like to a simple and affordable way to show their support for keeping God in our country's Pledge of Allegiance. The effort, started and led by Moms for Ohio made Ohio the first state in the nation to create such a plate. Similar efforts are currently under way in Pennsylvania and Tennessee. As of February of 2007, over 7,000 families have purchased "One Nation Under God" license plates. Unlike other specialty plates, there is no fundraising attached to the license plate. It is simply about doing what American's do best, standing up for what is right. For more information on this project, please visit: NBC. |

Religious References Pervade D.C. |
|
|
|
Fox News:
"WASHINGTON — Atheist Michael Newdow failed in his bid last week to remove prayer from President Bush's inaugural ceremony, but his complaint is unlikely to be the last in an effort to remove references to religion from the public discourse. From U.S. currency to government buildings, there are myriad examples of what some say is an inextricable link between the U.S. government and God."

Director of Moms For Ohio Theresa Fleming Testifies Before House Committee |

Theresa Fleming, Editorial
I am here today to ask for your support for House Bill 54, which will create a specialty license plate that says "One Nation Under God". We know your schedule is very busy and I thank you for allowing me the opportunity to speak to you about House Bill 54. Many Ohio families followed Michael Newdow's lawsuit last year and his attempt to remove the phrase "One Nation Under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance. We were contacted by so many moms who were deeply distressed that one person from California would be able to use our court system to take away our children's right to start their day with the Pledge of Allegiance. While we were relieved that the Supreme Court dismissed the case, because they were unwilling to uphold the Pledge of Allegiance as constitutional, the rights of all children to start their day with the Pledge of Allegiance will remain at risk. And in fact, early this year a new lawsuit was filed. |

Senate says OK to 'One Nation Under God' on car plates
If House concurs, motorists will have option to purchase
By William Hershey
COLUMBUS | Without dissent, the state Senate on Wednesday approved legislation creating a "One Nation Under God" specialty license plate.
Besides the phrase, which was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954, the specialty plate would include a likeness of the American flag, said Sen. Bob Spada, R-North Royalton, sponsor of the bill.
The Senate vote was 31-0. The House still needs to act on the proposal. If passed, this would be among dozens of specialty plates Ohio motorists can purchase. Proceeds from the sale of this plate would be used to cover the cost of issuing the plate.
By a 28-3 vote, the Senate also approved legislation to make labor organizations subject to the same campaign finance requirements as other contributors.
Sen. Jeff Jacobson, R-Butler Twp., the sponsor, said the legislation is necessary because of a recent ruling by Franklin County Common Pleas Judge John F. Bender.
Bender ruled that a section of a new campaign finance law that prohibited labor unions from using their funds and property for political purposes was unconstitutional. The rest of the law took effect March 31.
Jacobson said that without his bill, unions would be subject to no campaign finance reporting requirements and contribution limits. He also said he believes Bender's ruling will be overturned on appeal.
Kent Darr, spokesman for the Ohio AFL-CIO, said the labor federation agreed with the bill's intent - that campaign finance requirements should apply to unions. Darr said, however, he objected to Jacobson's prediction that Bender's decision would be reversed. "It's clear Sen. Jacobson believes that the Republican Party has the best (Ohio) Supreme Court that money can buy," Darr said.
Jacobson said he believes the decision will be reversed because "all groups, including labor unions deserve to be treated the same and ... the U.S. Supreme Court has held it to be appropriate for labor unions and corporations to be restricted."

Ohio is First In The Nation To Do So This past year, Moms for Ohio sponsored a petition drive to create a specialty license plate that would say "One Nation Under God" with the American Flag on it. The license plate was created to give families who would like to show their support for keeping "One Nation Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance a simple and affordable way to do so.
As Moms, we are very grateful to live in a state where despite the many challenges we face, our elected leaders are willing to take the time to stand up for the traditions and values that so many of us treasure. Special thanks go to Governor Taft, Senate President Bill Harris, Speaker Jon Husted, Minority Leader Chris Redfern, as well as to State Senator Bob Spada, State Representative Tom Patton and State Representative Tom Raga, along with all of the many state representatives and state senators who supported the effort. Ohioans may purchase the plate at any deputy registrar's office, online at www.oplates.com, through the mail, or by calling the Bureau of Motor Vehicles at 1-888-PLATES3 (1-888-752-8373). The Pledge of Allegiance license plates will cost $10 (The $10 fee does not include normal registration fees or postage). They may be issued to passenger vehicles, non-commercial trucks, motor homes, house vehicles and non-commercial trailers. The license plates may also be ordered as reserved or personalized plates with additional applicable fees. For more information, please call Moms for Ohio at 440-846-0276. |
